What you can learn from your habits

The stories that we tell ourselves keep us bound. They keep us trapped. And for what reason? Do you ever think about why you do what you do? The habits that we seem to have, what makes them stick? On one hand, I think it is from the subconscious mind trying to simplify things for us and make us more "efficient". On the other hand, I think it is that even though our habits might be destructive and we want to change them, somewhere in there it has a benefit. Now, this may take some deep reflection to work out what is the driving factor behind our insistent behaviours and mental patterns.

So how do we deal with this? Well, I think we must recognise what positive effect our so-called "bad habits" give us (be it comfort, security, safety in the known, or addiction). Once we can recognise what it is that drives us to do what we do, we can help change what we do.

Change is hard, yes. But change is inevitable. We find that when something is bound to change soon, we get irritable, frustrated, a little confused and overwhelmed. But it is at that point that we need to let go and fly. Spread the wings and trust that as we fall the air catches under our wings and we soar through with grace and ease. Getting to that point is scary, yes, because it is so foreign to us. There is no assurance of what is to happen. Even if we know that what we are currently doing isn’t serving us we keep doing it. It comes to a point where we need to get honest with ourselves and recognise what we REALLY want in life.

Part of me struggles with this thought pattern. On one hand, I like the "go with the flow, listen to your body" type approach. But on the other hand, tough love, honesty and discipline also serve its purpose. When we have a plan and stick to it, we get a release of dopamine that makes us feel good, feel content.

We must get to the point that we truly (and yes truly) are willing to actively create the life and person we really want to be or have.

We can change who we are. We can be who we want. Tony Robbins inspired me in this field. He envisions the type of man he wants to be and goes and becomes it. Doesn’t let anything stop him. Creates daily rituals that help build up his energy.

For me, this energy is imperative to a healthy mind, body and soul. When we are feeling great, we vibrate at a much higher frequency. We glow. We ooze a fervent beam of light.

So, what do you REALLY want in your life?

Got it?

Now back yourself, chase the dream, you can be the person you want to be!

Love Al xx
